Infants, Toddlers and Pregnant Women
Local public health departments play an important role in promoting the health of pregnant women, babies and young children.
It is important for pregnant women to have access to prenatal care, good nutrition, information and support services (including smoking reduction/cessation) that can improve the health of the mother and developing fetus. The Maternal-Child Health Program, Healthy Kids, MIChild and WIC help income-eligible women and children connect with medical care, nutrition and support services.
Breast-feeding support programs give new mothers information and help in choosing and practicing this healthy, natural way to feed infants. Childhood immunization protects infants and toddlers from serious, vaccine-preventible diseases. Children’s Special Health Care helps families of children with special health care needs.
