It’s estimated that more than 250,000 people are infected with HIV and don’t know it. Knowing your HIV status can save your life and the lives of those around you. The Health Department provides free, HIV testing and counseling by appointment.
HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is the virus that causes AIDS. It attacks the immune system by destroying CD4 positive (CD4+) T cells that are vital to fighting off infection. Early detection of HIV infection is critical in helping to minimize further transmission of the disease. If you are between 13 and 64 years old and sexually active, pregnant, want to become pregnant, or share needles the CDC recommends that you get tested.
