Second-hand tobacco smoke is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Second-hand smoke causes approximately 3,000 cases of lung cancer each year and has been linked to cancers of the pancreas, kidney, bladder, cervix, breast and brain.
Exposure to second-hand smoke is especially dangerous to children. It increases the risk of ear infections, asthma, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). More children die as a result of parental smoking than from all unintentional injuries combined.
