Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
Everyone can play a part in protecting the environment from the threat of electronic waste. As with all materials:
- Reduce – Keep your electronics in good working order and keep them as long as possible.
- While the typical lifespan of a computer is 2-3 years, upgrading your system can add an additional 1-2 years onto your system
- Purchasing quality products typically means a longer lifespan
- Consider leasing computer equipment. Items can be traded in at the end of a lease
- Reuse – Many electronics and computer components can be refurbished and reused. Your trash may be another person’s treasure!
- Recycle – Electronic equipment can be recycled for recovery of metals, plastics, glass, and other materials
- There are more companies offering services related to the recycling of electronics. You can ship your items directly to a recycler
- Before you purchase a large electronic component, check with the manufacturer to see if they have a trade-in or buy-back program
- Participate in electronics recycling initiatives in your community
