Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Everyone can play a part in protecting the environment from the threat of electronic waste. As with all materials:

  1. Reduce – Keep your electronics in good working order and keep them as long as possible.
    • While the typical lifespan of a computer is 2-3 years, upgrading your system can add an additional 1-2 years onto your system
    • Purchasing quality products typically means a longer lifespan
    • Consider leasing computer equipment. Items can be traded in at the end of a lease
  2. Reuse – Many electronics and computer components can be refurbished and reused. Your trash may be another person’s treasure!
  3. Recycle – Electronic equipment can be recycled for recovery of metals, plastics, glass, and other materials
    • There are more companies offering services related to the recycling of electronics. You can ship your items directly to a recycler
    • Before you purchase a large electronic component, check with the manufacturer to see if they have a trade-in or buy-back program
    • Participate in electronics recycling initiatives in your community
