Hancock, MI – The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department (WUPHD) is opening a 30-day public comment period on the updated U.P. Environmental Health Code. The Environmental Health code primarily oversees the permitting and construction of on-site sewage systems and water wells in Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon Counties.

After being presented with numerous letters of support from local engineering firms and contractors who design and install on-site sewage systems and water wells, the WUPHD Board of Health opened a 30-day public comment period.

WUPHD is gathering public input on the proposed code updates and will begin accepting comments December 1, 2022. Public comments are a very important part of making sure the decisions have been thoroughly reviewed and all aspects considered. You can submit your comments in writing to WUPHD, 540 Depot Street, Hancock, MI 49930 or by submitting the Public Comment Form via email to requests@wuphd.org.

The Current code and Draft code are available for viewing at all WUPHD offices and on our Website.
