To protect the health of those seeking body art services within the State of Michigan, the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services has developed comprehensive requirements under which body art facilities must operate. The requirements place the responsibility of inspecting body art facilities with the local health department.

The Michigan Body Art Code requires the following:

  • Licenses for establishments
  • Sanitation guidelines and requirements for proper post-piercing and tattoo care
  • Technician completion of a course with the OSHA required content on bloodborne pathogens
  • The Hepatitis B vaccination series be offered to all technicians employed by the body art establishment
