Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people such as with MERS-CoVSARS-CoV, and now with this new virus (named SARS-CoV-2).

It is important to take action because:

  • There is no approved vaccine or medication to treat COVID-19 patients.
  • Isolation and quarantine efforts seem to have reduced new COVID-19 transmission in other countries.
  • Reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death.
