WIC is a Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. WIC is available to pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infant and children up to 5 years of age who meet the income guidelines (100 to 185% Federal Poverty Level). For an example, a family of four with an annual income of $59,478 qualifies for WIC. Women, infants and children with Medicaid are income eligible. WIC provides healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, milk and cheese, yogurt, brown rice, whole wheat/whole grain breads, corn or whole wheat tortillas, canned beans and peanut butter. WIC also is a breastfeeding support program that employs International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants and Breastfeeding Peer Counselors. For women who cannot breastfeed, WIC provides infant formula.
Additionally, WIC provides Nutrition education, registered dietitian consultations, and referrals to local resources.
