Spring is arriving across the Western U.P., and as snow begins to melt, our Environmental Health team is preparing to resume outdoor field work. Conditions vary widely from property to property, so all early‑season scheduling will be handled on a case‑by‑case basis.

Current Field Work Status

Because many sites still have snow cover, standing water, soft ground, or limited visibility, we must be able to clearly see and safely access the areas we are evaluating before scheduling.

At this time, we are able to consider:

  • Well-only site evaluations
  • Well final inspections (with clear access to the pressure tank and wellhead)
  • Revisits where conditions allow us to complete the work

We are not yet able to perform:

  • Septic site evaluations where snow, water, or soft ground prevent visibility
  • Test holes or bore holes—road restrictions remain in effect, and equipment cannot be brought in

Before You Request Service:

To help us determine whether your site is ready, please call or email the Environmental Health Administrative Secretary at (906)-482-7382, ext. 119 or ehsecretary@wuphd.org.

If conditions are uncertain, you may be asked to send photos of the property so staff can verify readiness.

This step helps prevent delays and avoids unnecessary charges.

Revisit Fee Reminder:

If staff arrive on site and cannot complete the work due to snow, water, access limitations, or other conditions, a $150 revisit fee will apply.

Sending photos ahead of time is the best way to avoid this.

Winter Holdover Requests:

All Requests for Service submitted during winter were placed on the Spring Wait List in the order received.

We will continue contacting property owners, contractors, and customers as conditions improve and field work becomes possible.
